Baseball Legend #42

Friday night, I had the awesome privilege and honor to dine right next to the newest inductee to the Baseball Hall of Fame Mariano Rivera #42 Yankee Pitcher and his wife. They had just finished up visiting Cooperstown, NY. It turns out they like to eat at Cracker Barrel in Fishkill, NY.

Mariano Rivera seems like a very humble man, as he took time out to say ’Hi’ and let fans take photos of him while they were having dinner. I am literally kicking myself for leaving my cell phone at home. Because the Mercy Mavericks Baseball team pitchers that I am teaching this semester are not going to believe me tomorrow when I tell them. Though I sure thought of asking the baseball legend to visit my classroom, it didn’t seem appropriate.

I liked when famous sports legends, despite fame and fortune, give back to those in need. This Yankee pitcher is one of them who actually does by helping underprivileged children gain education through The Mariano Rivera Foundation.

While we tend to give honor worthy legends, let us not forget who made us that way. God says in Romans 15:22 We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. We must remember that it is even better to build up than to tear down by helping those in need around us.
