This week my media class is discussing the topic of Journalism going from information to participation. Students will be learning about the different types of journalism that exist. The textbook includes the history of several famous journalists that influenced the concept of objectivity. We discussed how events and stories are often negatively framed by media companies. Yet, there is still the need for journalists to remain fair and balanced when reporting the news.
In class activities include two group activities. The first group will be researching the Texas Church shooting in 2017 to see how religion can affect journalism. The second group will be reviewing how media’s cartoon satire caused the Charlie Hebdo shooting attack in Paris, France in 2015.
We also covered the communication and digital art skills that are needed for a journalist. We discussed the importance of doing an internship while in college, especially for gaining work experience in the field they’re studying.
