For week 4, students are learning about different types of applications software that are used in various industries and what are the basic requirements for it to run on a computer system.
Basically, there are two types of software, which are Open Source and Closed Source, which is known as Proprietary software.
Let’s define terms:
Open Source – Software that is available free of charge with its source code for modification and redistribution, such as the Linux operating system. Open source does not mean ‘copyright free,’ and often includes restrictions on the resale of the software. (Source: Open Source)
Proprietary – Computer programs that are exclusive property of their developers or publishers, and cannot be copied or distributed without complying with their licensing agreements. (Source: Proprietary)
Here are good sources that explain more about the advantages and disadvantages of each.

The students are discussing ethical issues that arise due to copyrights laws and internet privacy. Many companies collect our personal data, as we quickly give permission without blinking an eye to software applications when we agree to the company’s terms of the agreement before installation.
